LOCATION: Bangka, North Sulawesi, Indonesia
STORY BEHIND THE SHOT: The original photograph that is multiplied to create Reflections 9 is on a deep reef ridge, near Misool. A ridge underwater is no different than a mountain ridge – it seeply falls off into the deep abyss on both sides, but carries on as far as the eye can see. Currents can be extremely strong here, and the species growing on this ridge specialize in this environment. Whip corals are adapted for current, and easily flop to one side or the other depending on the tidal flow. The orange coral is a gorgninan, and it’s host to several black crinoids (relatives of starfish) who climb to the top of the coral in order to catch plankton in the current, and leather corals line the reef between the wire corals. A different species of wire coral can be seen in Ocean Essence 14, and Reflections 5.

They are easily rotated 90-degrees to use as a vertical, but please notify our design team while ordering if you plan to hang it vertically so it can be signed & numbered on the correct side, and we arrange the correct hanging hardware for you.
