STORY BEHIND THE SHOT: The original photograph that is multiplied to create Reflections 10 is of a colony of red whip coral (Ellisella ceratophyta) and a school of cardinalfish who live in it. Also, notice the black & white crinoids who cling to the whip coral to get in a better position to feed on drifting plankton in the current. The the naked eye, this coral appears green/brown at depth, as the red wavelength is filtered out by the water column. But my camera’s flashes, balanced to the natural daylight spectrum, bring back those colors that you would see if you were to bring the coral to the surface. You can also see the same red whip coral in the SeaScapes pieces, Firewater, and Whip It Good.
