LOCATION: Red Sea, Egypt
STORY BEHIND THE SHOT: You don’t really want to spend time maintaining an aquarium do you? Well, Lavish is the solution – essentially a maintenance-free fish tank for your wall! The ubiquitous Anthias fish swarm a reef of soft corals in southern Egypt’s Red Sea, creating a kaleidoscope of color that simply doesn’t exist elsewhere in nature. The water in the Red Sea has a unique tone of blue, and in this region, its extremely clear and warm year-round. Far from the overcrowded & touristy diving in the northern Red Sea, this region boasts amazing untouched reefs teaming with life, but that, of course comes with a logistical price – boats in this region and down into northern Sudan are fewer and further between. A travel challenge for some, but paradise to me.
Anthias fish are planktonivores, meaning they’re always found facing into the current, picking out tiny bits of food that drift past them. They generally live in large schools, but rarely venture further than a few feet away from the shelter of the coral reef. The colorful dendronephthya soft corals that grow here only look their best in times of high current. When it’s slack tide, they shrivel down in size and droop over, and there’s little point in me photographing them in that state, until the current picks up again.
