STORY: Where the shallow reef meets the deep abyss, magic ensues. Swimming near the drop-off feels like you’re about to leap off of Earth, into outer space. After that sheer cliff lies an endless blue void, and our natural apprehension usually prevents us from venturing further than a few fin kicks out. The thought of the open ocean (and what lies down in that cold, inky blackness) is what has kept all but the most adventurous close to shore for all of humanity. But at that conjunction of shelter and unforgiving nothingness, a bounty of life explodes unlike any other region of the ocean.
Deep, sheer walls create an zone where cold, nutrient-rich waters flow upwards as upwellings push water towards the reef. Here, photosynthetic stony corals soak up the sun with the aid of their zooxanthellae symbionts, and receive an endless supply of nutrients from the deep. It’s the perfect environment for corals to thrive, and what we’re seeing here is hundreds of generations over thousands of years, growing atop of the previous layer, as each coral colony reaches for the sun in order to out-compete it’s neighbor, grow, and reproduce. In fact, what we call sheer beauty, is actually a constant battleground as each coral fights for space using stinging cells, chemical warfare, and a host of other nefarious methods to expand it’s own reach on this most valuable real estate.
