Sole Survivor

STORY: The Red Mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) is perhaps the most important plant to coastal ecosystems. Not only does it provide crucial habitat for juveniles of many species, filter contaminants from the water, and protects coastal land from erosion, but it’s also a survivor species that has carved out a niche where other plants simply can’t survive. Even where we humans have cut down huge swaths of mangrove, it can quickly come back, as can be seen here in Sole Survivor, shot in the Bahamas. Left alone, this sapling will, in a few short years, become an entire grove, but for now, it stands alone.
