LOCATION: Lembeh Straits, North Sulawesi, Indonesia
STORY BEHIND THE SHOT: The original photograph that is multiplied to create Reflections 6 is of a crinoid (aka feather star, and sea lily), shot using a fisheye “probe” lens, deep within it’s arms. While the arms are extremely sticky for catching food, the metal and glass of my lens slides right in unnoticed, to give me the perspective of a fish living symbiotically within it’s arms. Crinoids are close relatives of starfish, and come in every color of the rainbow. They also play host to all sorts of tiny fish and invertebrates line clingfish, crinoid shrimp, and squat lobster. They’re often found perched up high on vantage points, so they can take advantage of the strong currents that bring plankton to be caught on their sticky arms. You can also see close-ups of crinoids in Ocean Essence 28, Ocean Essence 30, and Ocean Essence 31.
