LOCATION: Dominican Republic
STORY BEHIND THE SHOT: Words just don’t do it. A 40-ton, highly intelligent, gentle giant offers her calf up to you as if to say, ‘here, look what I made’. After 7 years spent with the whales, I came to have a very special bond with them. I could recognize individuals that I hadn’t seen in a year or two, and surely, they could recognize me too. Here, the calf is about 3 weeks old, and the mother is around 39′ long. I had spent time building a rapport with the mother over the previous years, and it paid dividends as she was now teaching her baby that I could be trusted. Enough so, that with my ultra-wide lens, the calf is only about 14” away from the camera. The eyes tell it all – calm & relaxed, and looking straight into you, piercing your soul.
