ALIEN #13 – Cuteness overload! This is a larval stage pancake batfish (probably Halieutichthys aculeatus), about 1.5cm long. Science does not yet understand the purpose of it’s bubble, but it will shrink as it grows, and completely fade away as it settles into its adult stage, where is slowly walks along the seafloor on hand-like fins. As a larvae, it is constantly in motion, doing a little shimmy wiggle dance, and has a single fin spine appendage that trails behind about 10x the length of its body – again, no one knows that appendage’s purpose. The mysteries are 1/2 the fun of the Aliens Collection!
