STORY: The silverside minnow migration is an absolutely amazing wildlife spectacle. Unfortunately, it’s not something viewable by most people because of their dynamic numbers and locations throughout the coral reef. But when I find them, it’s a fast & furious shoot for as long as I can stay down. By the millions, they school around me, reacting to my every move, allowing me to create various compositions around the natural coral landscape of the reef that sometimes matches my sketched vision for my wall art, and other times, catches me by surprise. I just LOVE the way the hundreds of thousands of fish create an ever-changing blanket of silver which can never be replicated in quite the same way. There have been years when the silversides are virtually non-existent; perhaps they migrated elsewhere, or perhaps the schools were decimated by tuna, snapper, and other predators. But on good years, I’m covered in a cloud of fish so thick that it blocks out the sun.
Each one of the three other images in the “Dance” series (Sundance, Night Dance, & Raindance) is similar in subject, but each has a different color palate and creates a very different mood & feel.
