LOCATION: Papua New Guinea
STORY BEHIND THE SHOT: I hate it when beautiful, perfect coral gets in the way of my shots of light rays breaking through trees! It was the setup of my dreams – massive trees on a cliff reaching out over a shallow reef, but the light rays only streamed for about an hour per day just before lunch. I made several compositions of this situation, including one of a model, which went on to win the Scuba Diving International Photo Competition. This location is actually inside a very unique marine ecosystem known as Witu Crater. It’s the tip of a mostly-submerged volcano, and the ridge above is ~1000′ above sea level, and inside the caldera the water dips down deeper than my boat’s depthfinder maximum of 850′. It’s enclosed by the ridge in a circle covering about 350-degrees, meaning I could slip my boat inside the southernmost part into this hidden lagoon, which was littered with WWII shipwreck parts and other bits of history, as well as several Papuan tribes who I got to know while living there for a little over 2 years. Arguably one of the most magical places on Earth.
Try this image side-by-side Jelly In The Sun – the rays complement each other nicely, and they were both shot within Witu Crater.
