STORY: Like a cloud of sparkling diamonds in the sky, this school of fish isn’t just trying to show off and look pretty for my camera – it’s actually exhibiting a defense mechanism behavior that’s been engrained into their instinctual DNA for millions of years. They become the most bold during the brightest sunny days, venturing far from shelter, out into the open water where there’s little protection from predators, but the reward of tiny plankton prey is substantially greater. And there, they may appear vulnerable, but their defense is the light. With their highly-reflective scales and the vast numbers of the school, the blinding sparkles that they create is sure to confuse any predator. As they form a river-like swarm, light bounces from all angles, making it impossible for a larger fish to single out any one individual; quite literally, Blinded By The Light. In fact, it made my eyes hurt to stare into the sun (even while filtered out by the water) to create this image, and my camera had a very difficult time focusing on the ever-moving school.
