Description
Alien #23 is a species of flying fish known as the Fu Manchu Flying Fish, on account of its barbels at it’s mouth. This specimen is an adult at about 6″ long, making it one of the largest creatures in the Aliens Collection. But when they’re younger, they look quite a bit different because their namesake fu manchu barbels are longer than their entire body! Flying fish are almost only found in the top meter of water, near the surface, so while I’m out on an Aliens dive at night, I often only find them in the final 20 minutes or so when I’ve ascended to the shallowest part of my dive. But sometimes, when conditions are pond flat, and there’s lots of floating sargassum around, I’ll skip the deeper portion of the dive and just look for surface-swimmers like this. Unlike other fish, most flying fish are completely unfazed by my lights, so it makes tracking them much easier. That is until they bolt out of the water and glide through the air for 20-30 seconds!
I’ve had many people ask if this is an above-water photograph. You know I’d never bore you with a dry photo! I assume they’re thinking the flying fish may have jumped, and I took the shot while I was standing on the bow of my boat. An understandable conclusion if you’re seeing this photo without the perspective of the others in the Aliens Collection.
For printing, we offer the Aliens as squares on either aluminum or canvas, but they are customizable into other shapes if your design plan requires it. You can purchase this luxury wall art online in standard sizes, but if you’d like to discuss a custom crop or size, please contact one of our design consultants at the art gallery. Perhaps our most popular arrangement for Aliens is a grouping of three of our 15″x15″ aluminums, but I encourage you to discuss the size & shape of your project’s wall, and one of our design consultants will help you develop an amazing contemporary art installation that blurs the lines between natural beauty and scientific fascination. Alien 23 is available up to a maximum size of 96″.
