LOCATION:  Papua New Guinea

STORY BEHIND THE SHOT:  A school of Longfin Batfish (Platex teira) swims up to investigate my camera on a deep reef in a remote region of Papua New Guinea.  Also known as spadefish, they are often quite curious, and they will come right up to me, sometimes even nibbling at my bubbles in hopes that there’s something edible there.  They split their time between the reefs, where they hunt for crustaceans and other small critters, and the open ocean, where they nibble on jellyfish, ctenophores, and other gelatenous bits.  As beautiful as they are, the only thing more beautiful is their juvenile form – each species of batfish has a uniquly stunning early stage.  And did you notice that one looks a little different than the others?  The individual at the bottom who is seperated from the school is indeed a different species – an Orbicular Batfish (Platex orbicularis) who is hanging out with his cousins.

If you like the color and feel of Batfish, be sure to also check out the turtle print, Candy Crush, or Day-Glo, which features a single gorgonian sea fan coral, illuminated by light rays split from the trees above.

TO PURCHASE A PRINT:  Batfish is best kept in it’s original ratio of a 3:2 vertical, so think along the lines of 16×24″, 30×45″, 40×60″, etc.  But if you need a custom crop or size, reach out to our design team so we can show you a custom size or crop with out Virtual Installation.
