Alien #2 Looking like an elitist villain from a James Bond movie, this larval-stage moonfish (Lampris guttatus) is staring with a suspicious side-eye. Also known as Opah, the moonfish is extremely rare (even unknown) to most scuba divers, as they generally stick to deeper waters in the 100-350m range. But like many deep water fish in the Aliens Collection, larval-stage moonfish will often rise to shallower depths at night to feed. There, they are sometimes attracted to the lights from my downline and camera. Unlike many of the creatures I encounter who are repulsed by my lights, moonfish actually tend to rush towards the light, and continually crash into me and my camera, so once they seem a bit disoriented, I always turn my lights off, and swim away. Photographing a larval moonfish can be very tricky, as they are like shooting little swimming mirrors, and they reflect back almost all of the light thrown out by my underwater flash. Adults can be quite large, reaching well over 100kg, and they get a beautiful red & bronze tone with white polka dots. But this larval moonfish has a long way to go, as it is only about 3.5cm long.
