ALIEN #11: Heteropod sp – aka Sea Elephant ~4cm long.
One of the freakiest creatures of the abyss, this mollusc is very different from what we commonly think of as molluscs. The foot is not a foot, but rather a swimming fin on it’s back. In fact, its quite a strong, active swimmer! While I’ve had the pleasure of studying and photographing quite a few heteropods, this is the only one I’ve ever seen with the appendage leading off to the right, which I can only assume is a feeding appendage. I have several other images from this encounter which show the full length of the appendage to be about 2x its body length, or about 8cm.
